About Why We March
Why We March is a grassroots 2SLGBTQIA+ organization dedicated to advocacy, community connection, education, and creating more inclusive communities. Through our work, we strive to support 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, respond to emerging community needs, and strengthen local capacity through collaboration, visibility, and leadership.

Position Overview
Why We March is currently seeking individuals to serve as Volunteer Board Members. Members of the Board of Directors play a vital role in the governance, stewardship, and strategic direction of the organization. Board Members are responsible for helping ensure that Why We March remains mission-driven, accountable, and responsive to the communities it serves.

This is an opportunity for individuals who are committed to equity, inclusion, and community leadership to contribute their skills, perspectives, and experience in support of a growing grassroots organization.

Term of Office
Board Members are appointed for a three (3) year term, with the opportunity for renewal in accordance with the organization’s bylaws and governance practices.

Core Responsibilities
Board Members are expected to:

  • Provide governance, oversight, and strategic guidance to the organization
  • Attend and participate actively in board meetings and board discussions
  • Review meeting packages, reports, financial information, and policy materials in advance of meetings
  • Support the mission, values, and long-term sustainability of Why We March
  • Contribute to informed decision-making in the best interests of the organization
  • Uphold fiduciary, ethical, and confidentiality responsibilities
  • Participate in committees, working groups, or special initiatives as required
  • Support fundraising, community outreach, advocacy, and relationship-building efforts where appropriate
  • Act as ambassadors for Why We March and its work within the broader community

Qualifications and Attributes
Why We March welcomes interest from individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Candidates should demonstrate:

  • A strong commitment to the mission and values of Why We March
  • An interest in community leadership, governance, and organizational development
  • Sound judgment, integrity, and a collaborative approach
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Reliability and the ability to contribute meaningfully to board responsibilities

Experience in one or more of the following areas may be considered an asset:

  • Nonprofit governance
  • Community development
  • Fundraising or donor relations
  • Finance or accounting
  • Human resources
  • Legal or policy
  • Communications, public relations, or marketing
  • Event planning
  • Advocacy, equity, and inclusion work

Time Commitment
Board Members are expected to attend regular board meetings, prepare in advance by reviewing materials, and participate in occasional committee work, events, or strategic initiatives as needed. This is a volunteer leadership role requiring an ongoing commitment to the organization’s governance and development.

Compensation
This is an unpaid volunteer position.
